Organizing the Nursery and Home Office

I’ve been hard at work at home trying to organize our 2nd and 3rd bedrooms.  Bedroom #2 will be the nursery and bedroom #3 is already the office.  I WILL have updates on both of these shortly.  I’m at 23 weeks now and working full time.  My weekends are full of cleaning, organizing, buying products we need to organize better and put those products together, and of course a lot of rest in between.  I have been taking some pictures along the way, so I will be able to show you where we started in all of this.  Sorry I just haven’t had the time to post much lately.  I miss this little old blog.
So I will have updates about how we organized our office better.  We worked with what we had and then had to buy some other products because we just had too.  This is why I love Ikea.  😉
Then I will have updates about the nursery.  That I should be able to take you week by week on.  We haven’t started doing any of the work in that room yet to change it over.  We only have taken all of the stuff out of that room.  We will be on vacation for a week working on the nursery, so I should have lots of updates along the way.
Here are some pretty pictures of some of the things that we have bought or order for the nursery and the office.  I will review the homemade products after I have received them.  All vendors have been great to work with so far.  :)
I bought a similar crib skirt to this one.  I changed the fabrics around a little.
I bought a similar crib rail cover to this one, but with fabric that matches the crib skirt.  Can’t wait to show you the whole thing together.

For the office we bought the following.
We needed more storage to accommodate all of our stuff.  Believe me, we purged hard too and we still needed extra storage.  We actually really love how our office looks right now.  We are questioning why we didn’t do this years ago.  We finally feel like we have a proper office and proper storage.
We needed, well mostly I needed, extra shoe storage space.  All of my extra off season shoes were in the closet in the nursery, so I purged and then we found this lovely at Ikea and it fit where we wanted to put it and it fit all of our extra shoes.  :)
OK so hopefully this weekend I will finish up making the office look pretty so I can take all of my “after” pictures so I can show off this room to all of you.  There will still be work to be done in the office, but we need to move on to the nursery and start fixing walls, priming and painting already.  Lots to do and I hope you will come back for the journey!!!  :)

A Little Organization

Sometimes it’s just easier to start with the little messes before some of the bigger ones.  Our home office tends to become a dumping ground for soooo many things in our house.  The number one thing that gets dumped here so quickly is paperwork.  It just adds up very quickly and can get out of control very easily.
Here is a small drawer station that is located on top of our file cabinet.  It was supposed to be used for important paperwork we wanted at hand, bills and some supplies.  Well it was out of hand and I had to clean it out.  Basically, I went through everything on the top first and then each drawer.  It took be about 1/2 hour total to go through everything and figure out if it was garbage, recycle or needed to be filed.

I ended up with this.  All cleaned up and organized.
See how you can’t see the paperwork inside the drawers anymore.  Yup that is how full these drawers were.
For me, if the little things are organized, then I can move onto the bigger things.  It just works for me that way.
So let’s look at what I didn’t organize yet.  Yikes this is a really big job and I’m just not ready to tackle it yet.  I’m trying to organize my home office, one project at a time….one area at a time.  This armoire is right next to the file cabinet.  It was my Grandmother’s and now it’s mine.  I want to paint it one day, but that is a large project for me and I will have to find the right time for that.  But I will be sure to share with you when and if I do.  So now you know my house isn’t always cleaned up and organized.  I try to organize my life one little area at a time.  Let’s take a look inside.
It already has some built in storage, but I don’t untilize them well.  I need to re-think these drawers and what I use them for.  So I will need to take everything out of the amoire and start over again.  I would like to turn this into my “extra decor” cabinet.  I’m really dying for a cabinet to holds all my extra decor pieces that I have around the house, stored in different places.
I added some storage.  But it is just not enough.  Ok, maybe I have too much stuff and I need to get rid of even more stuff.  But I do need to rethink this side of the cabinet and get better store or utilize the storage I have already in a better way.
This storage holds candles & candle holders only.  Think I have a candle problem?  I need to garage sale some of this stuff.
And let’s not talk about my desk…it’s partically organized, but when trying to clean up the floor in the office, this is what happened to the desk area.  Yup it went from the floor to piles on the desk…then I ran out of steam for that day.  I will sort through things and it will be cleared soon.  I also have to hang that cork board.  I want to use it as a “mood board” for projects in the house.  To use it in a way so I don’t forget my vision for a room or a project.  I can’t wait to hang it up.

Organizing The Office

I have been soooo inspired by iHeart Organizing lately.  Jen has an awesome organizing blog and she is very inspirational to so many people.  And she makes organizing stylish too.  Thanks Jen!!!
I decided I needed to continue to organize my home office after I took Jen’s Monthly Challenge in January for her “Project Paper” challenge.  Check out this post here.  That was the kick in the butt I needed to get my home office organized.  Thanks Jen. IHeart you and your blog.
So I decided to take on one area of the home office at a time.  First I tackled my cubbie/drawer area.  I have had these pieces in so many different configurations over the years and they are still functional, so we will keep them for now.  They hold so much stuff it’s great for storage and just a little bit of decor display area.
So what do you think?  Here is the before and after pictures.  I took everything out of the top cubbies and just sorted through and made piles.  Keep, Toss & Garage Sale.  Then the “Keep” pile went back in, more organized this time and I was done.  All the drawers have cloths type of stuff in them.  Some hats, scarves & gloves in three drawers {they are small drawers}, one electronic drawer & the big drawer on the bottom holds some extra towels.

I have two more cabinets in this room that I need to organize.  One that holds lots of bathroom type of stuff, but that is a small cabinet and the other cabinet is my Grandmothers armoire, which is large and holds lots of decor.  I will make this armoire my main hub for extra decor that I change out through the year.  It will be a great place to house everything I have and hopefully some extra stuff too.  So stay tuned for that post hopefully in a few weeks.
